Not sure why it doesn't switch to debug mode, but I learned recently that if you are using JDK 6 that you need to get the very latest 6.0.16 because the earlier ones had bugs in the breakpoint logic (I was on 6.0.14 and it wouldn't work, so I don't know how much earlier you could go and have it work too).
