I had almost the same problem, what I did was:

Added a function that return true if the error is set, false otherwise:

public final native boolean hasError() /*-{
if (this.error) return true;
else return false;
}-*/;

The i first check if hasError is true, if it is i throw an Exception in my
code, if not, i check the response.
