Maybe it's just me, but it's kind of hard to tell from your description what could be wrong.
I do see that you're using RootPanel mixed with LayoutPanel. Try adding the LayoutPanels to the RootLayoutPanel (something like RootLayoutPanel.get().add(myMainLayoutPanel)).
