I suggest you to go with pure GWT and JAVA backend. I tried to work with PHP backend on one of my project and after a few months I realized that JAVA backend is much much simpler to use with GWT. With JAVA you are equipped with full stack needed to build web app - SPRING, HIBERNATE, GILEAD...
