People previously complained about the same in SplitPanels; the official answer is that it's deliberate, because as soon as you expose an API, you're expected to not break it, so having everything "closed" gives you (the GWT Team) more room for changes. At the time, developers were encouraged to copy&patch the SplitPanels.
