The message was always 'undefined'. This issue resolved when I switched from the 'xs' to the 'xsiframe' linker. It also did not manifest with the standard linker. I'm still pretty baffled as to why it suddenly occurred since the code in question had been fine for a lone time. Since I should probably be using the xsiframe linker anyways I am just moving forward.
