If the device had an operating system and you were able to code it to do a ClientLogin, then direct interaction would be possible. Indeed I would like to work on such a project. My iMediMinder iPhone app engages, in part, in that sort of transaction. It'd be a "driver" as you call it, but whatever the device it needs a system to support it. The fact that you're asking makes me think you're not in the position of hiring :-)
