Ian,
I have always disliked the crass commercialism of Medical Director and
objected to the way Divisions have often promoted it as the only way to
go.
As well as these ethical objections, I rapidly came to dislike the
frequency
of crashes. Maybe these will be rarer with MD3. Maybe not.
I have to use MD2 in 2 different public sector locations, and used it
in previous GP settings but
I much prefer Genie. It costs slightly more, but the time saved from not
having to re-boot 3 times a day more than compensates. The quality of
support is great and the developers are really responsive to requests
from users.
It seems that the GPs who initially bought MD because it was cheap may
now
have to invest in new hardware to keep using it after the new version
with
SQL comes out. Sadly, most will be locked in due to inertia, ignorance
and a
lack of good advice from Divisions. MDW is not the bargain it used to
be.
I can't say exactly how the data transfer from MD to Genie is done, but
I'd be very surprised if it doesn't preserve most of the details of
current medications.
I gather it has been extremely good for GPs who want to use it for NPCC.
And while there are many PC Genie users, it also allows Mac OS and
mixed OS networks.

On Behalf Of Ian Cheong
We are presently investigating possible migration options from MD2.
On our short list:
1) * MD3/pracsoft has the advantage of familiarity - which users seem
to
want to gravitate towards
* Genie when we last asked a couple of months ago couldn't import
medication lists from MD; users are a bit scared of the quirky
interface
2 )* Best Practice has long term risks associated with longevity in the
market
* others have failed to impress
3) It's looking more like the devil you know versus the devil you don't
and the dollars weigh heavily in some minds and advertising seems not
a concern to others.
4) What I would like is:
* stories from switchers - good or bad
* cost justification of alternatives to MD - preferably quantifiable
productivity gains
Any help greatly appreciated.....
Ian.

Ian
1) everybody that chganged from MD2 to BP found the ease of using BP
excellent.
2) Which product has been on the open market longer ? BP or MD3. BP
has
been available to use for over 12 months, MD3 only now (December 2005).
Demo disks have been available for near 2 years. With MD3 no demo
disks.
3) HCN changed ownership and is now owned by Primary. Thus no longer
the
devil you know.
4) I can spend hours telling you about my switch. Elsewhere on this
forum
it has been discussed before (incl. by me). Rather than repeat
myserlf, you
can contact me privately and we can discuss the matter. In a
nutshell: Good
experience. If I knew last year what I know now, I would've jumped
ship
earlier.

Like Liz we swapped from MD2 to Promed/Medibase about 2 years ago. At
the moment we use Pracsoft 2 with it. Works for us and we have
absolutely no bother. I'm not certain about the support now because
we haven't needed to use it for a long time, but it has been excellent
in the past. We would be very unwilling to change. Greg M (lurker
and ignoramus)
