In many ways we are in the situation that pertained in the early days of 
the motor car, when each maker had completely different types and 
positions for controls for gear changes, braking, etc. Now all cars are 
the same, except for minor things like switch positions, etc.

I disagree that switch positions in cars are minor.  To switch on the
indicator & the wipers go on because some European cars has wipers other
side of steering wheel  is dangerous.  Drivers get such a fright they grab
here, there everywhere to switch it off etc. they nearly cause accidents.
How often o you drive behind sdomebody and the rear wiper is on - only
because driver can't find the off switch - was accidentally switched on.
Because the driver gets upset, this may increase accident rate due to driver
irritation.
