Not sure, but I have a guess: Could it be related to keyserver issues? I have Andrews key in my keychain so GPGMail doesn't have to contact the keyserver and both mails verify fine. At a time, when I didn't have his key I also experienced some issues, but those were related to keyserver timeouts and GPGMails bad behavior connected with that. So if TB uses a different keyserver than GPGMail that might explain the different behavior. And I know for sure there were some keyserver issues lately. Some of them were slow to respond or didn't respond at all giving GPGMail a hard time/spinning beach balls and long reaction times. Maybe this is complete nonsense, but I though I'd let you know.
