this might help you to understand the underlying concepts. You can use
OpenPGP on almost all platforms (Linux, Windows, Mac, ...). For Windows
there is http://gpg4win.org with a lot of good documentation. Good luck and
don't hesitate to ask if you've mor questions.

I have Mac OS X 10.6.8 but the rest of the family use various versions of
Windows.  Is there a Windows version they would be required to install?
 Most of the older users (70+) would not or could not install so this would
