           Summary: Avoid Index Length Restrictions
           Product: my.gPodder.org
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: feature request
          Priority: low
         Component: Generic
        AssignedTo: [email protected]
        ReportedBy: [email protected]
        Depends on: 619

Currently MySQL allows a maximum length of 1000bytes for indexed fields (#630).

We have currently circumvented this problem by restricting our field length for
indexed (unique) fields to 333 characters in utf-8.

If the only affected columns are URL fields, we could (maybe?) use a different
encoding that is capable of holding all valid URL characters but uses less
space then UTF-8.

Another possibility would be to remove the unique constraints (that cause the
tables to be indexed) and ensure uniqueness through triggers
(http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/create-trigger.html)

Please check for the maximum length of podcast/episode urls (#619). It no
current entry is near our current limit, we possibly don't need to solve this
problem now.
