Interesting, I am getting to learn a lot!  Incidentally the iPod functionality in Rhythmbox works fine.

Would there be a benefit of me trying to build gPodder from source? (this would be a good learning curve for me as I am a Windows developer who has converted to Linux).

I notice that libgpod1 also got updated at the same time (0.4.2 -> 0.5.2).
So I guess this is where the problem has come in. Is this something that
can (or should be fixed) or should I roll back some of my application
upgrades?

Okay just for some perspective from another distribution. This does
not appear to be a general problem with python-gpod 0.5.2. Gpodder
0.9.5 in Fedora Development correctly finds the pythong-gpod 0.5.2
module as installed from Fedora Development. There might be a
packaging problem specific to Ubuntu that you are encountering.
