Hi all, just my two cents. I have an iPod 5th gen (video), 30 GB, running Rockbox (www.rockbox.org). This works perfectly fine with linux, because the player shows up as a simple external hard disk. It also works fine with gpodder. It is not necessary to repartition your iPod, and in fact it becomes dual bootable, I can boot mine with rockbox or the Apple firmware.
I chose rockbox just for fun, I've never used Apple's firmware. The rockbox developers are lagging a bit behind though, because they have to reverse engineer most of the coding. Anyway, just to let you, there's more than one way to do it.
