I can't say for sure, but if gtkpod / libgpod supports the iPhone, gPodder should support it too. From what I know by reading on the Internet, you definitely have to jailbreak your iPod touch/iPhone, although I don't know if that still holds true nowadays. If you want something "like" an iPhone, maybe you should think of a Nokia Internet Tablet (N800, N810). They are not really phones, but you can use Skype over WiFi, have a complete Linux environment in your pocket and have many apps (BitTorrent, gPodder, MPlayer, games, ...) running directly on your portable device. Yep - gPodder runs _directly_ on the Nokia N8x0. For podcasts, I don't know if the iPhone maybe supports downloading podcasts directly to the iPhone without the need for a computer...
