I don't know the proper protocol, I just dug your idea. :)

A good idea although a little harder. The easiest way would probably
involve having a dialogue box in the settings of each podcast (the
area where you can select whether that podcast gets synced up or if
you have to do it manually) where you would set the genre. Whereas
setting the album can be a lot more automated. Still, I do like your
idea.
I guess we need to submit a bug report? Or how are features properly
suggested with gPodder?

I like this idea. More than just adding a name to the podcast, I
would also like to be able to control genre. Some of the podcasts
I get have odd genres, or no genres, which is how I locate them
when I am playing them on my blackberry.

Hello Wonderful gPodder Devs and other Subscribers to the list,
Yesterday moved from an iPod shuffle to a Sandisk Sanza Fuze.
While playing with the Sandisk, I realized that a large portion
of my podcasts (specifically the non-tech ones) don't have an
album id3 tag and thus all get lumped into unknown. I did a
search on the gPodder archives for id3 and didn't see anything on
this specific topic. I'd like to solve this issue which, I'm
sure would be beneficial for other users.
First of all, has someone developed a script for this? Or is
there some kind of option in the advanced preferences option that
I missed that would deal with this?
If not, I propose the following solution - have gPodder check the
file and if it doesn't have an album id3 tag - use the name of
the podcast (what displays in the left column of gPodder) as the
album name. Of course, this would add some processing time
(especially for someone that has a lot of podcasts) so it would
definitely be advisable to make an option. And of course there'd
have to be a determination on what is the best time to do it -
immediately after d/l, before a transfer, etc
