If you are booting a memdisk-like image, you are getting a copy in your machine ram and running from here. Is the same if you boot kernel+initrd if you doesn't mount a persistent home dir from anywhere ( NFS, CIFS, USB pendrive... )
Please give more details about your setup we can figure how to overcome your problem.
