I was wrong.   A jcrNodeType and be specified for collection elements in 
the OCM.   

So, it is at least feasible that I could fashion a custom 
ObjectConverter within the current framework that, depending on the OCM, 
will render a bean as either a structure of values or as a REFERENCE.
