FRLinux proposed the following answer: On our setup we feed slightly less metrics than you do, but we also got disk IO in the way. On the carbon-cache instances, I found it quite efficient to start 2 instances per box, one listening on 2003 and the other one on 3003. That way we can evenly distribute the sheer amount of metrics we shovel to the boxes.
