New question #233337 on Graphite:
https://answers.launchpad.net/graphite/+question/233337

Hello,

We're looking to save 1years worth of data using graphite and i'm trying to get
an estimate of the amount of storage, based on the retention settings, that
we'll need for this project. Problem is we don't know exactly what we'll be
collecting and how often. We currently have a system running cacti used for a
lot of our systems, so this would be the best place to start. Looking at
cacti's setting's for RRD's it has...

Step: 300s (5mins)
Hourly (1 Minute Average)
Daily (5 Minute Average)
Weekly (30 Minute Average)
Monthly (2 Hour Average)
Yearly (1 Day Average)

I'd like to setup a default carbon retention to match cacti's for my testing.
My question is, what would be the equivalent to the above ? What i have come
up with is the following...

retention = 1s:1h,300s:1d,1800s:7d,7200s:30d,86400s:1y

Would this be correct ? or am i way off ? a quick comparison from testing
seems to be pretty close if not spot on?

# du -sh /data/rrd /data/graphite/whisper
3.4M /data/rrd
3.3M /data/graphite/whisper

Also i'm curious as to what others have come up with as far as a storage/disk
space in large installations saving year's (or more) of data? Seaching around i
haven't found any numbers for storage (or maybe i've been looking in the wrong
place?). I've found quite a few RRD calculator's, would there happen to be a
*.wsp calculator out there anywhere ?

Thanks.
ps: I love graphite!
