For both Snow Leopard and Lion...

anthgradpc7:grass64_rb cmbarton$ $LC_CTYPE

anthgradpc7:grass64_rb cmbarton$ $LC_ALL

anthgradpc7:grass64_rb cmbarton$ $LANG
-bash: en_US.UTF-8: command not found

Maybe this is the wrong way to see what is set for these, but there is nothing 
for LC_CTYPE or LC_ALL for either of my computers.
