Thanks, Hamish... to wrap this up, and in case there are any other newbies to ps.map, the eventual solution was: 1) Go as high as I could go in terms of region resolution, before ps.map generated out-of-memory errors.
2) Set the paper size to 200" x 200"

Vectors work independently of raster resolution, and PostScript is a vector 
language. Therefore it is strongly advised to keep your vectors as vectors!
They have "infinite resolution", in the mathematical sense.
