Hi, my name is Bov. With some others of "Vox Humanitas" I plan to setup a preservation project for all dialects of a world recorded and geotagged so that the entries can be regrouped when users add new dialect areas via a map display. The recording software will be Shtooka and the database model is the Ambaraloader:
http://voxhumanitatis.org/content/ambaradan-owm2-storage-engine We think that Grass is the best option to do the job. For testing I installed Grass 6.4.0RC5 Windows and try to find my way. I couldn't start the vector digitizer yet: "Vector digitizer is not available (No module named grass6_wxvdigit)" Before trying some workarounds which I found on the forum I have some major question which our technical & database specialist Berto brought up: He would like to know how the generated maps can be retrieved to be shown in a GUI. If he has that information then he can quickly make up a prototype in Iliad for you to make experiments with rendering. Berto also installed Grass and had a small exchange on the #postgis channel, to define what kind of gps points should be in postgis, to be later available for grass. He understands that grass will be a rendering layer, i.e., something you can use to generate just any map and place points from ambaradan on the map. Because I'm very new to Grass and just starting to understand the syntax with in the djungle of all it's possibilities I would be very glad for any hint. The main purpose would be able to: -get world map and get it loaded -create polygons for each dialect area by users/contributors via a GUI -be able to add smaller areas into existing areas (I presume with additional layers) afterwards -making of sound recording and get them tagged with clicking on the place on the map where the dialect speaker lives In Grass I could open some map and could add points with some kind of blue crosses but I don't understand much about rendering. I don't have enough basics yet. Here I made a little simulation ("map creation") how it should work at the end: http://www.creativetranslations.eu/DialectWiki/index.php?title=Main_Page&Itemid=17 I would very please about any hint how the project can be done with Grass, any screen shot or information what options to use in the menues of Map Display or Layer Manager. And of course: whoever is interested in dialects is invited to contribute when evrything is on air.
