Ah, that explains it. Yes, I'm using 6.4 Orc 5.

there was a bug in the 6.4.0rc5 release unfortunately, but is now long
since fixed.

If you are building from source please try pulling the latest 6.4.0svn
source code (ask again if you need help with that), or if using Ubuntu
use the version from UbuntuGIS (ppa.launchpad.net).
[oh, good, I see the 9.10/Karmic Ubuntu package finally got updated to
fix this bug]
