  Thank you, Glynn. I didn't pick that up when I read the man page.

For display, you should probably set res= to a larger value to speed
things up. There's no point in reading the rasters at a resolution far
higher than can be displayed.

  True. I keep forgetting that I don't need high resolution for display
purposes, only for analytical purposes.

        d.rast -o ...

  Missed that, too, on the man page.
