Add-ons written for one won't work with the other. Thanks for the info. I see that now. I wasn' t able to install it anyway though, it says " make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop" , but that' s something for another day. I was advised not to go into grass 7.0 if I wanted a fast result and that's what I am going to do. Since I eventually managed to get my old 6.4.0svn version up and running again, I am sticking with it for the time being. Thank you very much for your help.
