You can only drape one raster over another (e.g.
to combine the colour information in an airphoto
with the elevation information in a DEM) in the
context of a visualization software like NVIZ
(which does the same stuff ArcScene does for ArcGIS).

If you want to turn 3D elevation vector points
into a raster with elevation values, use one
of the v.surf.* interpolation modules.

Thank you, but neither of those would work for me - what I'm trying to do is to

And I don't mean visualisation, I mean assigning cell values for elevation from
either another 3D surface or vector layer (both of which I have).

Sorry!

Alternatively, you can use:

r.shaded.relied

That will be 2D only.

Thanks, but there doesn't seem to be a way of elevating a 2D raster
surface. Do you have any experience with this, and would know what
command to use?

Many thanks,

Anna

Dear all,

I was wondering whether it is possible to use GRASS to drape raster
images over existing 3D surfaces or vector layers.

I know ArcGIS is capable of this, is seems a fairly straight-forward
procedure there
(http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/tutorials/3D_analyst/3D_5.htm),
so I was hoping to achieve the same using open source GIS.

GRASS has a v.drape module, which can drape vector layers over 3D
surfaces, NVIZ seems to do the same.

It would be great if someone could tell me that GRASS (or any other
open source GIS package) is capable of draping raster images over
either other
rasters or vectors containing elevation information.

Many thanks and all the best,

Anna
