Stephen - Adding an attribute table to the input map is probably the best thing to do!
You can create the patched vector with no attribute table, and add it later - but you'll then have to go back and use other tools to create a table and fetch attributes from the original.

I have two different vectors that I would like to patch together. one doesn't have an attribute table associated with it. The other does.
