Hi - ok so I'm convinced that there is a bug in the grass installation bundled with qgis. I can't for the life of me change directory from within the grass gui command console. So what I've done is install grass as a stand alone, which does work as you would expect. your suggestion of looking at C:\OSGeo4W\apps\grass\grass-6.4.4svn\bin\r.univar.sh.bat convinced me - the qgis grass installation doesn't create this path, and I think something must get confused - r.univar.sh.bat is found here C:\Program Files\QGIS Dufour\apps\grass\grass-6.4.3\bin under the qgis installation.
