Ultimately had to recompile GRASS-6.4.3 to get d.mon to work again. The
make generated numerous errors, but much to my surprise make install
worked and solved my problem (at least for now).

So, the problem is not with compilation. GRASS64 was working
well on my system (except for v.dissolve and lib gmath, see other
list issues). Oddly, when I mistakenly entered d.mon wx0 it not
only didn't work (which should be expected), it disabled all the
other monitor options (seemingly permanently). When I changed to
another location the problem persisted which really surprised me.
I'm not sure if I'm able to help more. One more thing. What do you have
in `$HOME/.grassrc6`?
I have:
GISDBASE: /.../grassdata
LOCATION_NAME: nc_spm_08
MAPSET: PERMANENT
MONITOR: x0
GRASS_GUI: wxpython
Fortunately I have other machines to work on, but this is my
primary machine for a large research project that emphasized GRASS.
I'm in the process of moving to GRASS7, but I couldn't get it to
compile on this machine (Markus N is helping me with that), so I
stayed with GRASS64.
