I don't see anything wrong with the "classic" approach you describe
for determining point projection to a surface.  Creating a ray and
surface intersection event may even be preferable in some cases as it
will record multiple ray intersections with the same surface.
Otherwise you could just wrap up all your points in a closed polyline
and project that.
