You could just start with a symmetrical ring of circles and invert it. I scripted an inversion plugin a couple of years ago: http://spacesymmetrystructure.wordpress.com/category/inversion/ and Lorenz Lachauer made a grasshopper version recently: http://eat-a-bug.blogspot.com/2009/02/inversion.html To make animations like on that wiki page, you could then use a stereographic projection onto a sphere (which is itself just a special case of 3d inversion) and rotate it
