According to http://www.gdal.org/frmt_l1b.html AVHRR LAC/HRPT (1 km resolution) and GAC (4 km resolution) should be processed correctly. If not, please write to the GDAL mailing list or contact Andrey Kiselev directly, as stated in the manual page.
