Yes, sure you can disable it.
When you go to http://versioncheck.torch.sh there are instructions on how
to turn it off.
However, if you have a http proxy you can also use that to connect through
if you want to have the version check (which we recommend).
The config parameter for the proxy address is http_proxy_uri
