To clarify, at the risk of going off-topic, I /believe/ that it was
the Better Privacy Firefox addon which was causing my issues before -
it would occasionally delete a site's localStorage contents maybe to a
pattern but after realising, I didn't keep it long enough to find out.

Maybe this is not an issue for you or your users but for anyone with
similar addons or are using a userscript on a website that actively
uses localStorage it might appear inconsistent to the user.

Agreed that of the solutions that currently exist, localStorage is
probably the best choice but I understand this to be a suggestion to
address the cases where localStorage is not appropriate.
