"The Firefox preference store is not designed for storing large amounts

First of all, can someone tell me what is meant by "large amounts"? kB?
MB? ...? So is there a way where I can store some data elsewhere?
(Preferable in FF somewhere, but I am open for every idea.)
I am talking of a list of some thousand entires with ~200bytes per
entry. I need it for a before/after comparison...
