Hi All,

I am in Argentina for Christmas and just did an 11 mile run in the
mountain town of La Falda....thought you guys would enjoy a report
from Summer (my girls like to say we "migrated" for Christmas).

The run was tough...running in Greenville all the time does not
prepare one for continuous hills, and rocky rocky dirt roads. Most of
the streets here are concrete instead of asphalt which are really hard
on the legs so the routes I am using are mostly dirt roads.

However, the views are incredible and so you really don't notice the
tough run. It was a 70 degrees and overcast for my run which was
fine...and the 4,000 foot altitude did not seem to affect my running
(my understanding is that starts to come into play more past about
6,000 feet). I can tell you that running as a hobby REALLY makes
traveling to other places more interesting because you can really see
so much of a place on a long run.

There's only one 1//2 Marathon in this state...and I missed it by a
month and no other races of any length this month due to Christmas and
it being the hot part of summer here...so all my running will be just
training for my marathon in DC in March. Running is not very popular
here and there is only 2 or 3 running clubs in the country. There are
almost NO running tracks except in the 2 largest cities and they are
in big stadiums for professional atheletes. I did find a local roller
blade track that is 1/10th of a mile around....but it is too hard of a
surface to do intervals so for this month I will just run hills and do
some fartleks for my speed days.

Ok...end of the "travel report" ..I now have a question maybe someone
in the group can help me with.....because of the rocky road and hills
(basically, you are ALWAYS either going up or down a hill....there is
NO level surfaces to speak of)....my running time is about 1-2 miles
slower pace...for the same effort (measured by my HR monitor and RR
intervals, confirmed by "how I feel")....and so I am a bit worried
that at the end of the month of training this way I will be in good
cardiovascular shape but will have lost some running speed. Anyone
know if this is the case or will my speed be preserved when I get back
to level flat surfaces? Will I suffer too much of a loss without
track speed work every week?
