A Supreme Court appointed Committee has indicted Zaheera Sheikh, key witness in a Gujarat riot case, as a "self-condemned liar".
In a report submitted to the Supreme Court, the Committee said Zaheera was induced to repeatedly change her affidavit.
The report, which was authorized by the Supreme Court, further states that this inducement most likely came from the BJP MLA Madhu Shrivastav. It also said someone seemed to be taking care of her expenses.
According to the report, Zaheera, the key witness in the Best Bakery riot case, was induced to change her statement and as a consequence, her statements are inconsistent.
At the same time, the Committee gave a clean chit to social activist Teesta Setalavad of the charges of inducement levelled against her by Zaheera.
The court has, however, made it clear that it has not accepted the report and sought the opinion of the counsel for both Zaheera and Setalavad in regard to "acceptability" of the report.
The SC has posted the matter for further hearing on October 24. (With PTI inputs)
