Even as the district observed a hartal on Tuesday in protest against the "growing custody deaths" in Kerala, an accused alleged that he was brutally tortured in police custody.

The youth from Olavanna, told reporters at a private hospital that he was falsely picked up by the Kasaba police on Monday. He alleged that after assaulting him brutally, the police handed him over to the Nallalam police station.

The accused claimed that he was rushed to the hospital by the cops who informed hospital authorities that a stomach-ache ailed him. He said that this was not true as he was severally beaten.

The police, who denied the charges, said the youth was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in a theft case.
