KANNUR: A research scholar from the Netherlands was detained and manhandled in her hotel room at Iritty, nearly 40 km from here, by activists of a tribal outfit on Friday, the police said. The Iritty Police said 14 activists of the Janakeeya Vimochana Munnani (popular liberation front), associated with the Adivasi (tribal) Vimochana Munnani, barged into the room of Louisa Johanna, 26, a Ph.D. student in a university in Hungary, and manhandled her. The activists, including three women, accused her of having ulterior motives in conducting a discreet study of the biodiversity-rich Aralam farm and wildlife sanctuary. The police team rushed to the spot at around noon and took into custody the activists, led by Jaison, leader of the outfit. The police said Ms. Johanna checked into the hotel on Thursday. She visited Iritty in July also, as part of her study of the tribal population in the region. Iritty Circle Inspector Prince Abraham said Ms. Johanna had all travel documents with her. The police suspect that the attack was in retaliation of the refusal of the hotel owner to pay money allegedly demanded by the activists. |
