Dear friends,
India has signed, but not ratified the Convention against Torture. Amnesty International India has on several occasions expressed grave concerns over the fact that torture and ill-treatment continue to be endemic throughout India and continue to deny human dignity to thousands of individuals. As on April 2007, 144 countries have ratified the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Only 8 countries, including India have not ratified the Convention. India is in the company of Comoros, Dominican Republic, Gambia, Guinea- Bissau, Nauru, Sao Tome & Principe and Sudan. Amnesty International India members will be marking 26 June in a number of ways - public demonstrations, seminars, candle light vigil signature collection among others. Please sign http://www.petitiononline.com/aic122/petition.html The signatures collected through this online petition would be submitted to the Prime Minister during the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament. Please forward this to your contacts and let's together Make a Step to Stop Torture.
