*PUBLIC MEETING AGAINST INDUSTRIAL COASTAL CORRIDOR*

                                               MAKE IT A SUCCESS

*Date*- 3rd May 2008

*Venue*- Gurajada kala kshetram, Visakhapatnam

*Speakers- Medha Patkar, Sandeep Pandey, Bojja Tarakam and K.Balagopal*

*What is industrial coastal corridor?*

                                  It's conglomeration of many Special
economic zones (SEZ) set up along the coastal region by government of Andhra
Pradesh. In this coastal corridor many petro-chemical and other export
oriented industries will be set up. According to conservative estimates the
government will acquire 45 lakh acres of coastal lands which are for the
proposed 70 SEZs,theme parks, mega chemical complexes and pharma cities
which are part of coastal corridor.

*Where it will be set up?*

The industrial coastal corridor is going to
be set up in phases along the 9 coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. The
stage is set to acquire lands from Srikakulam,Vijayanagaram,East Godavari,
Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore. According to Government Order no 34,
under phase-1, as part of coastal corridor it is planned to set up
Petroleum, chemical and petrochemical industrial region( PCPIR) in one lakh
and fifty thousand acres at an extent of 603 Sq.km in the districts of East
Godavari and Visakhapatnam. In the subsequent phases, the coastal corridor
will be extended to 972kms length in total in the remaining 7 districts.

*Key issues:*

*Livelihood of the marginalised:*

The fisher people, dalits, agricultural labourers, artisans, poor peasants
who are already experiencing tremendous stress on their livelihoods are
worst hit.

80 lakh fisher people are living along the 972km coastal line of Andhra
Pradesh.

Fisher people, dalits who own assigned lands, small peasants and
agricultural lands will be deprived of their livelihood as their lands will
be acquired for coastal corridor.

Owing to the chemical industries being along the coastal line, fishes are
already in grave danger there by affecting the livelihood of fisher people.
We are getting to know the adverse affects of industrial development along
the coastal line more recently. Recent events are testimony to this fact.
The emissions of industrial wastes from the Simhadri NTPC of the mandal
Parawada in to the Sea resulted in massive deaths of Olive Ridley Turtles in
January of this year. Tons of fishes were washed away in to the shore of Durga
beach on 14th and 15th February of this year. In addition, the pollution
caused by industries to be set up will cause severe harm to the people.

*Water resources hit:*

The diversion of 385 million liters of water from the left canal of
Aeluru for the coastal corridor in place of quenching the thirst of
Vizagites will create water crisis. Diverting 220 million liters of water
that is mainly alloted for the assigned lands of Dalits , poor peasants and
other farmer's lands to the coastal corridor in the Samalkota region of the
East Godavari district is causing precarious situation.

*Food security:*

The nine coastal dists account for rice production worth 16,095,35 crores.
If coastal corridor is set up it will hamper production in 20,23,870
hectares which produces 67,64,203 tonnes of rice there by affecting food
security of marginalised.

*Demands*

   1. Scrap SEZ act and G.O number 34 unconditionally.
   2. Don't destroy the livelihood of Dalits, poor peasants, agricultural
labourers & fisher folk by acquiring prosperous agricultural lands, assigned
lands owned by Dalits and mairne lands in the coastal districts.
   3. Don't pollute the fertile delta lands and destroy enormous marine
   life.
