Zubaida Qureshi (mother of Abdul Subhan Qureshi — ASQ — the named suspect in
the Delhi bombings) spoke to the media. Note the subtle differences in the
presentation of *Hindustan Times *in comparison with *Times of India
*and *Indian
Express*. This representation is part of an ongoing narrative that has
unfolded after the blasts. All three newspapers have narrativised Zubaida
through the frames they have imposed on public opinion — the presumed guilt
of ASQ. Her public appearance and appeal to her son is coopted by the frame
of ASQ's culpability. A television channel has now headlined: "*Is techie
Tauqeer India's Osama Bin Laden*" . This post concerns itself with the
specific issue of re-presentation in newspapers.

Zubaida appeared before the media yesterday dressed in a burqa, and that is
how she chose to present herself to the outside world. Ordinarily this
should be a value-neutral act. The media cannot help how she appears in
public. However, it does become problematic in its re-presentation in the
media and that is an indicator of journalistic and newsroom subjectivies.
Note the contrasts in the presentation of Zubaida's appearance between*Hindustan
* *Times *and the other newspapers. While *TOI, IE, *and *Hindustan *publish
a picture of Zubaida along with her appeal, *Hindustan Times *crops her
image and blows it up to give prominence to her identity as visible via a
narrow opening in her burqa. Media researchers have demonstrated that the
representation of the veil by media in liberal democracies positions it as
either a threat to liberal societies or as symbolic of female oppression.

"There are more ideas on earth than intellectuals imagine. And these ideas
are more active, stronger, more resistant, more passionate than
''politicians'' think. We have to be there at the birth of ideas, the
bursting outward of their force: not in books expressing them, but in events
manifesting this force, in struggles carried on around ideas, for or against
them. Ideas do not rule the world. But it is because the world has ideas...
that it is not passively ruled by those who are its leaders or those who
would like to teach it, once and for all, what it must think" - Foucault
