Dear all,

This narrative misses out the whole history of struggle of LGBT
communities in Kerala. The term coming out is about coming out of the
hitherto closetted sexualities to the public. Is that the case of
kerala? Where else in India, there has been an anthology of writing on
homosexualities in the regional language like in Kerala? (Swavarga
Laingikatha kera;lathil, ed by Reshma Bharadwaj) A full feature film
portraying lesbian love? (Sancharam by Ligi Pulappally). Various
studies on film and same sex desire, (T Muraleedharan, Jenny Rowena,
Ratheesh etc) questioning biological determinism (Shiju) and many
many studeis. Where else in India one would find an organisation like
Sahayatrika, which not only mobilised and did intervention with the
community, but also created political space and public discussions and
alliances with other progressive groups? where else sex worker's
movement and LGBT communities have been in close alliance as here?

Coming out has happened already. years ago. What one does today is a
coninuity of that. The past struggles needs to be acknowledged.
Whether it is individual struggles of lesbian women in their
communities, or coming out through a suicide, or in the media.

We are not going back to a point in history, but continuing it with
our little successes.

Ahmed Rafeek
