8th January 2009 Dear Friends, Greetings…. *Monday, the 12th January, that too between 11AM to 1PM* will be a busy day for all of us as we are going to have Pongal holidays subsequently. But, think again. Ettiyappan feared that it may be dangerous for him, he even told his son the previous day that his supervisors may force him to enter the gutter to clean the block as the machine has failed. That is why he took leave on Monday. But, Tuesday, the 6th proved fateful for him. He could not refuse when his supervisors assured him that nothing will happen and asked him to enter the 'Belly of the Beast' after sunset. The A.E had a problem on hand. The block could not be removed for more than one week as the machine cannot handle this block. Ettiappan, his co-workers and his supervisors know of the ban by the Madras High Court. The A.E took the risk recklessly after sunset despite court order. Now, the urban underbelly of the beast has taken his life. The Asst Engineer has been suspended and a police complaint registered. The authorities have now offered to give his job to his son, may be to do the same job without any protection from illhealth , infection and death. Are they going to make him the Son of the Soil? They are trying to cover up for their negligence by planting a story that he went down willingly. Who on earth will enter a sewer manhole full of poisonous gases and shit of millions of people? It is certainly not Ganga Jal. In our meeting yesterday, the M.D said that he is also concerned but does not seem to have any idea, technology and the burning motivation to set the house in order. It is exactly this type of mindset that has to change. Friends, For removing all forms of scavenging from the face of India , for the sake of justice and equity, you have to invest your time on Monday. And protest the mindset of the rulers and politicians and scream against the discrimination.
