About this joint statement on the "barbaric assault in Mangalore".....I think it's absolutely ridiculous to praise the media for "bringing the assault to public notice and their unrelenting efforts to get the State to act against those immediately responsible for it.". Without the media blowing the whole thing up into consumable sensational "horror" stories, the "horror" would have been a lot less for the women involved as they would not have been humiliated in front of a world-wide audience. Plus the attackers would have less motive for their actions if they knew the media was not going to give them much attention anyway. The media is precisely what is the problem. And what does it really matter that the men "immediately responsible for it" would be acted against? As if these men have done something exceptionally brutal that would deserve the police to concentrate on them above all else--and moreover, as if the legal process in India is such that a case against these guys would not in fact end up traumatizing the victims (who will have to testify) even further while just giving the men the feeling they are heroes... A responsible media would not give these incidents too much attention and in stead report on the political context that is creating these kind of incidents....but of course that doesn't sell so well and doesn't create quite the same platform for middle-class hysteria and Hindutva masculine bravado...
