Dear Friends, Tomorrow, 13th December 2010 it will be one year since the C.B.I. submitted its report in the death case of Aasiya Jan,17 and Neelofer Jaan,22 of Shopian found dead by the Rambi-ara Nullah in an high security area surrounded by the camps of Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF and the State police. The post-mmartem and Justice Jan commision had concluded that the two had been raped and murdered. The J&K High Court and Justice Jan also concluded that the police had not done its job and was either a party to the crime or was shielding someone. The entire state was agitated over this and Shopian town supported by the valley had a 45 day strike demanding justice for the case. CBI assumed charge of ivestigation and submitted its final report that concluded that the two had died a natural death by drowning, and it exonerated the policemen but charged all other whose findings and demands were contrary to a theory of natural death, which included, public prosecutors, Government Doctors, relatives of the two women, lawyers taking up the matter in the court in all 13 people. Dissatisfied with this more than forty organizations pointed out the lacunae and lapses of the CBI report through an open letter to the Chief Justice of India, National Human Rights Commission, and National commission for Women demanding justice in this case. We did not receive a response. Hence we are gathering tomorrow to let the CBI know that their report is a cover-up and discontent is simmering not just in Kashmir but throughout the country. To show our dissatisfaction we are presenting the CBI with bedsheets for their next cover-up. Sheets have come from all states, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, M.P., Chhattisgarh and from many organizatiosns which have a national presence. We are gathering in front of the Sai Baba Temple, Lodhi Institutional Area at 3:00 pm to display the sheets and then walk down and present them to the CBI at 4:00. We request your to send your team to cover the event.
