New Delhi: A day after the BJP showed a video targeting Congress chief
Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra for his alleged land deals, Congress
on Monday hit back by displaying several photographs showing Narendra Modi
with a group of people including Afroz Fatta who, it claims, is a "kingpin"
of a Rs 1,000 crore hawala racket.
The Congress claimed Fatta was raided by the Enforcement Directorate
(ED) last month in connection with a multi-crore money laundering case in
Surat and dared Modi to submit himself to an independent probe.
Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala called Fatta a "well known BJP
supporter and a protege of Modi". He said the Gujarat BJP's website and
Modi's personal website "proudly display" these photographs. "Will Modi
agree to an independent probe through an agency outside Guajarat?"
Surjewala asked.
In a counter to the Congress allegations based on the Fatta pictures,
the BJP said the party was in no hurry to reply to the Congress on this
issue, but would first ask the Congress leadership to come up with answers
to the Vadra land deals. "We are in no hurry to answer to the Congress
queries, but they (Congress) must answer on what happened to the Vadra
case. If they are looking for CDs, we can also come up with CDs on Congress
leaders. We would like to ask what happened to those CDs," BJP spokesperson
Nirmala Sitharaman said.
Shortly after the Congress' charge, Modi's key aide Amit Shah
re-tweeted a picture of Congress MP Mohd Azharuddin, purportedly seen with
Fatta, which was later removed from his twitter handle.
The Congress contended that according to ED, the racket exceeds Rs
1,000 crore and can go up to Rs 5,000 crore and alleged that the hawala
racket being run by the "kingpin" had "deep underworld links".
"What is the nature of relationship, connection and protection offered
by Modi to Fatta, the alleged hawala kingpin who features in a number of
photos along with the Gujarat CM in various social and political
functions?" said Surjewala. He questioned whose money, running into Rs
1,000 crore, was being transmitted through the hawala racket and emphasized
that there is a need to find out the purpose for which it was being brought
back in India.
