This pro-Modi slogan is bad news for RajnathAnand Soondas | TNN
Lucknow: This is a pro-Modi slogan, but you won't find it screaming at you
from billboards. Nor is it playing ad nauseam on radio and TV.
But hang around a bit in parts of old Lucknow and you begin hearing it,
sometimes in whispers, sometimes openly. "Modi ko jeetana hai toh Rajnath
ko harana hai
(If Modi has to win, Rajnath has to lose)."
It doesn't help that NCP boss Sharad Pawar, perhaps articulating what
is being talked about in certain quarters, recently said in an interview
that because of "acceptability issues" NDA constituents and would-be allies
may choose Rajnath Singh, the BJP president and party candidate from
Lucknow, over Narendra Modi as the man to lead the country as PM.
"They (the BJP) will not reach the magic figure of 272 seats," Pawar
had said. "I don't see that type of a situation today. They will need some
support. A government with the support of regional parties seems to be a
possibility. The regional parties are not very favourable towards Modi.
Within BJP, probably Rajnath Singh is less controversial."
Asked about it, Surendra Goyal, a Chowk resident who professes his
support for BJP, said, "No one will gain in the party if Rajnath loses from
Lucknow. What message does it give when the president of the organisation
is defeated in a constituency that Atal Bihari Vajpayee made his own."
Others say that it could be the supporters of sitting MP Lalji Tandon,
who sulked for long when the seat was snatched away from him so that
Rajnath could be fielded from Lucknow, which the latter may have found
safer than Ghaziabad, spreading the campaign. A few, of course, blame it
all on a worried opposition.
A BJP leader here agreed that he, too, had heard from cadres about the
new slogan. "But I don't know how much importance we should give to that
kind of talk," he said. "Maybe it just shows the extent to which everyone
wants Modi to becomePM."
