Indian historian Bipan Chandra died today in his sleep at the age of 86,
family members said.

Mr Chandra was considered to be one of foremost scholars on India
independence movement and was an authority on Mahatma Gandhi.

Family sources said he died around 6 AM on Saturday morning at his home in
Gurgaon.  He had not been keeping well over the last few months. The
cremation will take place later in the day in New Delhi.

Mr Chandra, who was a life-long communist, had many of his books prescribed
as a standard history text in Indian schools.

The former professor of History, was born in 1928 in the Kangra Valley of
Himachal Pradesh. He studied at the Forman Christian College, Lahore and
then at Stanford University, United States.

He did his PhD thesis from University of Delhi.  Mr Chandra was a member of
the University Grants Commission in 1993.

*New Delhi:* Well known Indian author and historian Bipan Chandra died on
Saturday morning at the age of 86. He was considered to be an expert in
political history and economics.

He has authored a number of books including The Rise and Growth of Economic
Nationalism, Communalism: A Primer, The Epic Struggle, Freedom Struggle and
many more. He specialised on the national movement and is considered to be
one India's foremost scholars on Mahatma Gandhi.

Chandra taught at the University of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University
and was also associated with the University Grants Commission of New Delhi.
He was the Chairperson of the Centre for Historical Studies in JNU.

Twitter has been abuzz with reactions fowllowing the news of his death.

Prominent historian Bipan Chandra, considered to be India's foremost
scholars on Mahatma Gandhi, passed away early Saturday at the age of 86.

A Padma Bhushan awardee, Chandra wrote several books on Indian history and
politics during his lifetime.

He also served as the member of University Grants Commission in 1993.
